A love story that recounts the effects of a single evening’s rendezvous on the lives of two former lovers who have been separated for more than twenty years.

Upon learning that he is dying, the novel’s hero, Michael Fitzgerald, must battle not only time but the troubling ghosts of his own past in order to resolve the single area of his life that he feels remains unfinished. To achieve this, he must journey to a small town in remote Nebraska to meet with Cassie Cutler, a woman with whom he had an unconsummated love affair in his younger years. Invited to her home for dinner, Michael meets her very likable husband and her very needy daughter. During the course of their evening together, Michael and Cassie examine their mutual past and the intense sexual attraction they still feel for each other. Ultimately the reader will learn of the horrible incident that lead to the parting of these two, a brutal confrontation that both have attempted to keep buried through all the years of their separation.

In the early morning when Michael finally leaves, the two protagonists are profoundly changed. Michael is ready to accept the inescapable fact of his impending death and Cassie is finally able to come to terms with the emptiness she has been experiencing all her adult life.

THE RAIN IS FULL OF GHOSTS edition by J Daniel McNally Literature Fiction eBooks

This is a lovely, gentle book-about love, respect, pain and poetry. Two people, a young high school English teacher and one of his brightest and most receptive female students develop a deep friendship which has clear undertones of sexual attraction yet remains platonic. Both characters suffered violence and abuse in their families which marked them deeply and both characters have a love of language-especially the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay ( one of her poems inspired the title of the book.) These two characters touch on such a profound level. Perhaps they could have healed one another- but tragedy sent them spinning out in opposite and destructive directions. The climax of the book brings them back together and explores the strong feelings they still have for one another although by then they, sadly, have other commitments and limitations. The writing is literate, insightful and compelling and nicely explores the tensions between convention and passion where time and place are everything. A good read.

THE RAIN IS FULL OF GHOSTS edition by J Daniel McNally Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I loved this book -- a real page turner. McNally's often poetic writing swept me along into the lives of characters I came not only to like, but also admire for their strength and fundamental decency. At the core, this is a deeply ethical work that probes a forbidden love between a man and a woman that ultimately transcends the roadblocks and "ghosts" that keep them apart. Toward the end, I kept reading slower and slower because I didn't want to leave the passionate world of Michael and Cassie. Betsey Steeger
Being an author puts me in touch with numerous quality pieces of literature but none captured my heart and soul as profoundly as this work. This outstanding story flowed seamlessly through each page with a brilliant cadence. McNally's descriptions and ability to weave his magnificent selection of words into a fascinating tale was exceptional. He transported me back and forth through the lives of the characters with precision and meaning .Michael and Cassie were so vividly described that I felt as though I actually knew them.
I would recommend this wonderful work without reservation.

With its sophisticated, yet easy to read style, this book kept me engaged from the moment I started reading it, to its final paragraph. Cassie and Michael's beautiful intriguing love story is a must read.
A love story about a deeper love between a man and a woman. About life, recovering, letting go. Well done.
I found myself taking my precious time reading this book. I did not want to miss any details and was fully immersed in Michael and Cassie's love story.
I bought this book because it was written by a very good friend. I didn't know what to expect. As I read, I found I couldn't put the book down. At first I didn't like the sudden moves to the past, but then I realized they were necessary. Good job Danny!
Interesting ideas.
