The Christian A Story Sir Hall Caine Hall Caine 9781490483122 Books

The story starts with childhood friends John Storm and Glory Quayle on a ship bound for London. Much to his father's disappointment, thirty-year-old John is going to serve as a chaplain at a hospital, a position obtained for him by his uncle the Prime Minister. 20-year-old Glory has gotten a nursing position at the same hospital as an excuse to follow John to London.

John soon becomes disillusioned with the hypocrisy of the affluent church he is assigned to, where he is ridiculed for his concern for the poor and ostracized for actually preaching the Word of God. Glory is disillusioned, also,as her sparkling, willful personality causes her to clash with the strict woman in charge of the hospital. She soon quits to follow her dream of becoming an actress, and her letters back home add a humorous touch as she colors the events in her life to seem more noble and more exciting than they are.

John is horrified by Glory's "scandalous" actions, but when he tries to offer her guidance in his overbearing, overly serious way, she rebels. His response to that and his other woes is to join a monastery, making both of them miserable by his decision. Most of the story, which covers about two years, centers around each of them vacillating about which direction to take in life. Glory realizes that John's obsession with her is responsible for his confusion, and feels obligated to stifle her own dreams, but can't quite bring herself to do it. John is having a major melt-down in his faith, practically descending into madness near the end. (*semi-spoiler coming*) They do finally end up together, sort of, but if you are looking for a happy ending, you won't find it here.

The novel was written in the late 1800's, and it's fascinating to get a glimpse into the mindset of that century. It was kind of shocking to see the N-word thrown around so casually in the narrative, since people from that era didn't see a problem with it. It's also interesting that Christians back then were faced with some of the same dilemmas and social issues we have to deal with today. The book is very long, but if you have patience and don't mind feeling vaguely depressed and unsatisfied at the end, it's worth reading for the educational value as well as entertainment.

so/so
Not for the faint of heart nor for those in search of comfort or relaxation. Too negative, depressing & lengthy. Not encouraging to anyone!
This was a terrific story with noble people with Godly Character
It was a story that keeps you reading to see what happens to the Christian
I chose the rating because I could not put it down. I loved the story , the characters are like u can imagine happened in times written.
The life struggles are still the same. We have so many more advantages today, because of people like Father Jon and Glory and of course some of the other characters in the book. Well worth reading.
A friend loaned me this book and it was very old and I was concerned about caring about the old paper it was printed on. I didn't want to damage it. I was surprised to find the book available on for my . I find it easier to read on the and I turn on the voice activation when I am busy with minor chores. It's a great story and very well written. It was published in 1867 so it is written in 'proper' English and no smut. There is a romance involved but it is much more than that. There is a lot about the status of women in London in those days. There is a lot about the church in addition to that. The story centers on an idealistic young pastor and a young orphan girl he has been smitten with. I haven't finished the book yet (it's long and I just got it) so I am looking for a happy ending. I would be interested in reading some of the author Hall Caine's other books if they are available. I can recommend this book.
