As a long time military junkie, I am constantly on the lookout for new authors to try. Robert Gandt's Bogeys And Bandits was a fast read which totally drew me in. I cared about each of the subjects and rooted for each's ultimate success. There was enough technical detail to give the book authenticity without having so much that it would loose readers who were there for the people side of the story. Even if you don't have a great interest in things military, you should find this book enjoyable.Product details

Bogeys and Bandits The Making of a Fighter Pilot (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Gandt Thomas Block Books Reviews
I'm an aviation buff & I enjoy reading these tomes. Robert's book, to me, was spot-on for someone like me. Made me feel like I was a
nugget! Nicely done Robert.
Bogeys and Bandits The Making of A Fighter Pilot should be titled "The Making of Any Good Pilot" as the concepts, study routines, devotion and pursuing the pure passions in life are the corner stone of aviation or any career related to aviation. This in-depth look at fighter jet conversion and their students could be applied to all aspects of mastering an aircraft away from terra firma. The book was so well researched, illustrated and written that it could impart knowledge and also keep you in suspense, determined by the progress of the "nuggets". Shock, awe and sadness are three ways Gandt has displayed the results of his research and when the subjects of the book reminstrate exactly that, you know that the book has passed over the boundary of being information partly retained, to an unforgettable moment where you feel any loss or set-back personally. As a military aviator I can sure empathise with every butterfly-riddled stomach, every cluck of the instructors tongue over the intercom, every mistake and the disappointment in yourself when the mission did not come off as you had previously planned or rehearsed. Gandt makes any person, a lay person to flying and makes them a pseudo nugget allowing them access into the inner circles of the instructors and more importantly, behind the tough, brave facade displayed by every male and female pilot destined to be the tip of the U.S. Navy's spear. Gandt has truly made me feel emotions I have not felt or experienced since pilots course with the RAAF some years ago. Gandt has the ability to impart this knowledge whilst applying it to a real life story line which is resultantly aimed at the wider community and not just sectors of the community who have lost their minds being apart of aviation and its plethora of forms and miniature replications which are produced. I cannot commend this book highly enough!
Robert Gandt is one of the best aviation writers I have read, and I have read many. He develops his characters so when the action starts you care about them much more than just warriors doing their jobs. Bogeys and Bandits sounds like it would be low on excitement since it is a story about training fighter pilots, but the book, like life, is full of surprises, Character development makes each action mean more to the reader since one cares about the people involved. Top Gun was a very successful movie because one learned a lot about the characters. This book does the same. It's a great read.
I loved this book and recommend it as the best in its category of books about Navy pilots. A lot happens to each of the pilots-in-training that are covered. I learned a lot about how pilots are trained and what their day-to-day life is like (very busy!). A lot of the parts were very interesting, such as when the author talks about pilots who quit the Navy after all the expensive and difficult training has been given to them, and about going in front of review boards in danger of losing your wings after a particularly scary performance in the air, or even giving up your wings voluntarily if you grow to fear the "smoking hole in the ground" too much (what you'll end up as if you crash your jet and can't eject safely.) Could easily be made into a great movie.
Of all Gandt's books, this is my favorite....but then again I am very biased. Half a century ago it was my pleasure to be a naval aviator, and so his stories brought back many memories. This is the real deal. If you want to sit in on an APM (All Pilots Meeting) in preparation for carrier qualification training then here is your chance. If you want to slide down the glide slope, meat ball guiding, to number 3 wire, here is where it happens. He intertwines the flying techniques with student personalities, carefully painted with a fine and humorous brush. Ready Room chatter and comrade abound. Students and instructors clash and bond. Its almost as much fun as the real thing. Its educational, its funny, its poignant, its the best I have ever read. Somehow he also manages to delicately bring in lady pilots and the politics that accompanied them. Remember the Vegas Tail Hook Scandal? Robert Gandt didn't pussyfoot around the subject, he covers it. This book is for every person that wants to ride the jockey position in a jet fighter but especially for any other tail hookers out there who wants to do it again.
First the review I found this a GREAT book documenting the trials and tribulations of training people who go into very high-tech fields. Though it describes the training of fighter pilots, it could as easily describe the making of surgeons or engineers. The same things that we see in medicine occur in this community the sieve gets finer, the best get through it, and usually the unworthy don't.
Tragedies can and do happen along the way--that happens in both fields as well--but in fighters, the loss is usually more personal than it is in medicine. What Gandt did was to bring enormous warmth and humor into the fray, and he managed not to be judgmental when he could easily have been. It stands as one of the best books on or near the subject that I have read.
META-REVIEW Reading over the other reviews posted here is fascinating. All reviews are either raves or total pans, the former outnumbering the latter. Objections seem to be from the uninformed--or those who, for reasons of their own, want Gandt not to be correct. Alas, he is. But it remains a mark of a great book that it excites strong passions.
As a long time military junkie, I am constantly on the lookout for new authors to try. Robert Gandt's Bogeys And Bandits was a fast read which totally drew me in.
